OTTAWA, TUESDAY OCTOBER 15, 2024 – The 2024 Ottawa Fire Truck Pull held on October 5, at Lansdowne Park, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada was a resounding success, with 27 teams from 3 provinces and 37 cities participating in support of Epilepsy Ottawa. Bryden’s Army walked away with the 2024 Best Team Spirit award. Bryden’s Army is a team celebrating a 6 year old hero, Bryden. Bryden has gone from 100+ seizures a day to minimal seizures in a week and has had a love of firemen his whole life. Bryden was the Guest Starter for the team’s pull while the team chanted their motto, “Pull Bryden Pull!!!”.
The Shawn Mathieson First Responder Challenge invites firefighters, police officers, and paramedics to compete to see who can pull a 10+ tonne fire truck 100 feet the fastest. The Challenge is also open to people in training to become a firefighter, police officer, or paramedics.
The Ottawa Fire Truck pull very much represents who Shawn was as a person; family, strength, community spirit, teamwork and helping others. At 6 feet 5 inches tall, family oriented and always having the best interest of others, Shawn was the epitome of a firefighter.
He was a mountain of a man, with a personality to match. That may explain why throughout his career with Ottawa Fire Service, Shawn affectionately inherited the nickname "Shrek." Team Shrek competes and raises funds every year in Shawn’s honour and is proud to be this year’s Most Charitable Team.
The winner of the 2024 Shawn Mathieson First Responder Challenge was Lacité Boys Class of 2025, showcasing remarkable teamwork, fundraising efforts, and speed. Special recognition to Lacité Boys Class of 2025 for also being crowned the Best Overall Team, excelling in all aspects of the event.
